Flat Tire on the Road in South Florida? Here’s What to Do

A flat tire rarely happens at a good time. Whether it happens on I-95 during rush hour, along Alligator Alley, or in a parking lot in Fort Lauderdale, what you do in the first few minutes matters. It keeps you safe, and it can keep a simple puncture from turning into a damaged wheel. Here is the checklist our mobile tire team recommends.

1. Get to a safe spot first

If the car starts pulling to one side, you hear a flapping sound, or the low tire pressure light comes on, ease off the gas. Avoid hard braking or sudden steering. Turn on your hazard lights and move as far off the road as you safely can. A wide shoulder, an exit ramp, or a parking lot is ideal.

Try not to drive far on a flat tire. Even a short distance can damage the sidewall and the wheel, which can turn a quick repair into a full tire replacement.

2. Stay visible and out of traffic

  • Keep your hazard lights on the whole time.
  • On a highway, get out on the side away from traffic. If the shoulder is narrow, it is often safer to stay inside with your seatbelt on.
  • If you carry reflective triangles or flares, place them well behind your vehicle.
  • Never try to change a tire on the traffic side of a busy road.

3. Know exactly where you are

When you call for help, your location is the most useful thing you can share. Note the highway and direction of travel, the nearest exit or mile marker, or a nearby cross street or business. Sharing your phone’s GPS location also works.

4. Take a quick look at the damage

Once you are in a safe position, a quick look at the tire helps the technician arrive with the right equipment:

  • Nail or screw in the tread: often repairable, depending on the size and location of the puncture.
  • Cut or bulge in the sidewall: generally not repairable. The tire needs to be replaced.
  • Shredded tire or tire off the rim: the tire needs to be replaced, and the wheel should be checked too.

A technician will confirm whether a tire repair is safe after inspecting the tire up close.

5. Spare tire or mobile tire service?

If you have a usable spare, a jack, and a safe place to work, changing the tire yourself is an option. Keep in mind that many compact spares are only meant for short distances at reduced speed, so check the label on the spare or your owner’s manual.

If you do not have a spare, the location is not safe, or you drive a truck, van, or commercial vehicle, calling a mobile tire service is usually the better choice. SOS Mobile Tire comes to you at the roadside, at home, or at work across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. For emergency roadside calls, we typically arrive within 30 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic and your location. We can repair the puncture on site or replace the tire, with no tow needed.

How to lower your chances of a flat

Not every flat tire can be prevented, but a few simple habits help:

  • Check your tire pressure at least once a month while the tires are cold. The recommended pressure is on the sticker inside the driver’s door jamb, not the number on the tire sidewall.
  • Tire pressure changes with temperature, so check it more often when the weather swings between hot afternoons and cooler mornings.
  • Look for low tread, cracks, bulges, or nails and screws stuck in the tread.
  • Rotate your tires on the schedule in your owner’s manual to keep wear even. Learn more about tire rotation.
  • Do not ignore a tire pressure warning light. If it stays on, have your tire pressure monitoring system checked.
